Inthi Marikar takes over Trinity Rugby

Following Trinity’s disappointing stint in the Singer Schools Rugby League, the Old Trinitians Rugby Football (OTRFU) interim committee will cease the current coach Lote Raikabula’s services and will appoint Inthi Marikar as the interim coach for the current season.

The former New Zealand national sevens representative Lote Raikabula who was appointed in late 2016 ahead of the 2017 season will be relieved of his services after two years following this week’s Trinity v Wesley encounter.

With Raikabula’s coaching stint coming to an abrupt halt, Trinity Rugby ‘Scrummage’ has appointed former national representative and the outgoing High-Performance Manager of Sri Lanka Rugby to take charge of the coaching division for Trinity College.

This late appointment comes with one week to go in this year’s Singer Schools Rugby League with Trinity plummeting to their lowest ever position in the last 8 years. Under Lote Raikabula, the Trinity College team were placed third last season playing a unique blend of rugby but this year, it has been the complete inverse. Trinity currently sits at 6th place in the cup points table.

Marikar who tendered his resignation as High-Performance Manager will step-in to assist his alma mater where he wore the college colours in the year 1987. A one-time Lionsman for Trinity College, he went on to represent the country while still playing for his school.

Later, Marikar joined the Longdon Place club, CR & FC and moved to Kandy Sports Club where he won the Club Rugby League, the Clifford Cup and the Sevens title as a player. Taking up coaching, he has enjoyed success with the Sri Lanka National sevens team, Air Force SC and CH & FC.

As High-Performance Director at Sri Lanka Rugby, he was the driving force behind the implementation of a sevens structure in the system while laying out focus on the juniors as well as the development programmes.
